The Class of 2017 techniques In! Bike racks are all occupied. Lines are a tiny bit longer again to have food. Books are being purchased. Tools are put away and summer construction has dwindled down (well, nearly all of it). Cars filled up with boxes of clothing and school materials are being directed around campus to halls that are residential. Moving carts, student ID cards, and last second trips to Target; folks, it is officially Move-In Day.
I was overwhelmed by the energy of the campus as I was walking the campus to take some pictures. Often we forget that I work at a university campus filled with dreamers, innovators, and future leaders that are global. I found myself simply using it all in while smiling at pupils and parents I have never met before. ( It might have already been just a little weird, but hey, I was caught in an instant). Suddenly, I wanted to travel back in its history, go back to college and experience this all over again!
Yesterday early morning, I saw the look of excitement and awe on the faces of first-year students as they were entering their dorms for the time that is first. Subsequently, we sensed a great amount of pride and a bit of hesitation from parents because they struggled to allow their kids go. It is apparent that this brief moment is just a milestone in most of the lives. Students look ahead to their next four years at USC and wonder at every one of the possibilities it could bring, while parents feel a sense of success because they were somewhat responsible for getting their kids to college. With all of these emotions swirling on campus, I’m able to realise why there were therefore many hugs going around.
During the welcome convocation today, speakers stood in front for the incoming class of 2017 and provided suggestions about how to take advantage of their own time here at USC. I would like to reiterate what Professor Harkness, from the Dornsife College, stated during her speech: Be present. It isn’t as easy in your own life as it sounds but you will be a better human being the sooner you can practice it. Towards the incoming that is new at USC and present kids; I challenge you to be present. Show up in your classes. Show up in your conversations. Be present while you research your options. Be present when you’re meeting people that are new. Be present whenever you write your personal statements. Be present when you study for your AP/IB tests. Be present when you take the tests. Be present whenever you ask her/him down. Be contained in conflict. Be contained in brand new challenges. Be contained in all of the new experiences and activities. Take it all in. Be present!

Hey Parents! Listen Up!

Parents play a crucial role in the entire college process. Often times, parents help subsidize some, if not all, of attending an university or college, and are always there to ask those specific ‚parent‘ questions that you as students can’t be bothered with (actually mom, did you need to inquire of the tour guide when the last meningitis outbreak was?)

However, there are instances where moms and dads must have a seat that is back allow their sons and daughters to inquire of the hard concerns. Here, we have a compiled a listing of ‚dos and donts‘ about parenting during the college application and search process:

Do assist your son or daughter understand what they want for in a college, reminding them to consider location, size, academic programs, cost/financial help, etc. getting a good fit for your specific wants and requirements is more important than the cachet of the name.

do not gather all of the information for them! Allow them to make contact with admission counselors and find out the information that is relevant themselves. After all, they will be in college someplace in no time, which is important which they learn to navigate the procedure themselves.

Do encourage your sons and daughters to check out university campuses, and include them on those trips! The way that is best to get acquainted with an university or college would be to result in the stop by at campus.

Don’t check your sons and daughters in for campus tours, interviews, receptions, etc. Let them take action! This shows us they are independent and mature.

Do remind your sons and daughters that not receiving in to their first option school might seem like the end of this world at that royal vegas fun play moment, but that things exercise and as they work hard that they will be successful wherever they go as long. And, encourage them to transfer if that organization remains at the top of these list even with enrolling somewhere else.

Don’t fill out their applications for them! We are able to tell also it reflects poorly on the applicant. We know that these are adults applying and expect their applications to share their true vocals and style.

So the moral is: find a stability. Realize that your child is approximately to embark on a life-changing journey and that beginning to take ownership of the college application process is a good jumping off point. But, also rest assured that we are here to answer those tough ‚parent‘ concerns, even when they include where to send the care package.
